Block Printing

Hand block printing is one of the oldest, if not the oldest form of textile printing and several historical accounts date the craft back to the 1300s. Desired motifs are first traced and carved onto Sheesham wood, after which depending on the complexity of the design, it may take on average up to 10 days just to carve one block. Woodcarving is not just a form of business for families in Jaipur. It is the epitome of a craft steeped in family traditions and speaks of loyalty, preservation and dedication. The wooden blocks are then dipped into dyes and stamped onto the stretched fabric, a laborious task that requires skilled precision with just manual judgement, not expensive machinery.
